Zeno of Citium
Founder of Stoicism — live in agreement with nature and reason.
Overview
A merchant who lost everything in a shipwreck, Zeno turned to philosophy in Athens and founded Stoicism, teaching at the Stoa Poikile (Painted Porch) that gave the school its name. He synthesized Cynic ethics, Heraclitean physics, and Socratic method into a system: the cosmos is a rational, ordered whole pervaded by divine reason (Logos); the good life is to live 'in agreement with nature', that is, in accord with reason; and virtue alone is good, everything else 'indifferent'. His writings are lost but his framework shaped the most enduring philosophy of the ancient world.
