Overview
A student and biographer of Plotinus, Porphyry edited and published the Enneads, giving Neoplatonism its enduring form. A prodigious scholar, his short Isagoge — an introduction to Aristotle's Categories — became the standard logic primer of the Middle Ages and posed the 'problem of universals' that would dominate medieval debate. He also wrote on the soul, defended vegetarianism, and composed a notorious critique of Christianity that was later condemned and burned.
