Overview
One of the most influential and controversial philosophers of the 20th century, Heidegger reopened the ancient 'question of Being' that he thought Western philosophy had forgotten. In Being and Time he analyzed human existence (Dasein) as fundamentally 'being-in-the-world', thrown into a situation, caring, and facing its own death — arguing that authentic existence means owning our finitude. His later thought turned to language, poetry, and technology. His deep and unrepented involvement with Nazism remains a grave stain on his legacy.
