Overview
The Sixth Patriarch of Chan (Zen) Buddhism and its most revered figure. Tradition portrays him as an illiterate woodcutter from the south whose spontaneous insight won him the patriarchal succession — a narrative modern scholars regard as largely legendary, shaped by his follower Shenhui to promote the 'Southern School'. Whatever the history, the Platform Sūtra attributed to him teaches 'sudden' awakening: the Buddha-nature is already present in every mind, and enlightenment is directly seeing one's own original nature. His teaching shaped all later Chan and Zen, fusing Indian Buddhism with Chinese, Daoist-tinged spontaneity.
